Online Therapy

The Coronavirus has produced stress, anxiety and fear in many individuals.  Lots of people now feel uncertain about their present and their future.  These conditions may motivate individual men, women, and adolescents to seek counseling/therapy.  But because of social distancing and/or a paralyzing fear, in-person sessions are less appealing.  For many, this has raised the prospect of online therapy.  Clients in need of warmth, reassurance, support, education, and insights into their personal situation… Could this platform work for them?  Studies and my experience suggest it does.

Research suggests that online therapy works just as well as traditional face-to-face therapy.  Studies looking at outcomes for clients and the quality of their relationships with therapists, found them equal across telehealth and in-person conditions.  Since this meta-analysis (92 studies and 9,000 clients), many other studies have confirmed the value of online therapy.

It Can Be Convenient

Online therapy can take less time away from the office/home and reduce worry about traffic.  There is no need to travel miles and miles for your appointment, and worry about gas money and care upkeep is reduced.  You are able to save both time and expense of traveling to your appointment.  Your session can take place wherever you are comfortable.

Online Therapy Is Very Comfortable For Some

Many people, especially teens and young adults are comfortable because they use the technology often.  More people are using email, webinars and text messaging to communicate.  Online therapy can be more comfortable and easier than talking to someone in person…especially when speaking about personal and private information.

It Can Provide Access To Therapy For Those Who Can’t Get To An Office

In some rural communities, the nearest therapist office may be an hour or two away.  Some people with chronic illnesses or disabilities may not be able to drive or easily leave their home.  Individuals with severe anxiety and panic attacks may find online therapy more comfortable therapy.

Online Therapy Vs Traditional Therapy

Today, many private insurance companies now provide coverage for what they see as a “legitimate” service.  And surveys show many people are receptive to online therapy:  no driving to an appointment, no searching for a parking space, no worries about childcare while they are away, no need to switch therapists if they move, and no problem if your therapist happens to be far away.

How Does Online Therapy Work And What Do I Need To Do?

As long as you have a smart phone, Ipad, PC (personal computer) or a laptop, you can utilize online therapy.  Just down load a free app on your device, such as Zoom, provide an email address and we’re almost there.  I will email you a connection link and then simply click on the link and….”we’ll be live”.  With a good internet connection we will be able to have a safe, secure, confidential and comfortable therapy session!!
